Mary Parrish, a member of the New Bern Historical Society’s Board of Directors, left, with New Bern High School senior Makenzie Richardson, the 2025 recipient of the Harriett Marks and John R. and Alice Land Taylor scholarships.
The New Bern Historical Society announced the 2025 recipient of the Harriett Marks and John R. and Alice Land Taylor scholarships.
New Bern High School senior Makenzie Richardson was selected as the recipient among a group of talented and deserving applicants, said Anthony Giardino, executive director of the New Bern Historical Society.
Giardino said Richardson demonstrated academic and athletic excellence throughout her high school career.
She was a straight A student who played basketball and softball all four years of high school, and who during that time won All State honors along with Rookie, Offensive Player and Sportsmanship Awards.
She is a member of groups such as Project Unify, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the National Honor Society, and involved in multiple projects in the community.
Richardson will be attending Campbell University in the fall majoring in special education and minoring in entrepreneurship and Christian studies.
The Marks Scholarship was established in a trust for the estate of Miss Harriett Marks. It was created in 1968 under the terms of Marks’ will as a memorial to the Marks family.
The Taylor Scholarship, although a separate entity, is designed to complement and supplement the Marks Scholarship. It was created in 2015 and is administered by the North Carolina Community Foundation and sponsored by their grandson to honor the memory of his grandparents.
The scholarships are awarded annually based on both scholarship and financial need.
The combined funds generated by the scholarships provide greater financial assistance for the recipient, Giardino said.
Both scholarships designate that they be awarded to a senior graduating from New Bern High School and that they contribute to the tuition, board or lodging for the purpose of obtaining higher education at an accredited college, university or other institution of higher learning.
They are renewable for three succeeding years if academic standards are maintained.
Giardino said the Marks and Taylor Scholarships further the Historical Society’s mission to celebrate and promote New Bern and its heritage through events and education.
