The 16th Annual Sertoma Scholarship Breakfast drew large crowds of community members to the Emporia Senior Center Saturday morning, to share breakfast and support local scholarships.
This year, visitors chose from a menu of all-you-can- eat biscuits with sausage gravy, or a sausage biscuit sandwich, scrambled eggs, sausage patties and milk, juice, or coffee. Meals were available through dine-in, carryout, or drive-thru.
The scholarship breakfast is the club’s largest fundraiser. All proceeds from the Scholarship Breakfast support the Sertoma Club’s student scholarship program, which raises funds for Flint Hills Technical College (FHTC) and Emporia State University (ESU) students. Each year, the Sertoma Club gives away roughly $10,000 in scholarships. Vicki Brooks, Sertoma Club of Emporia President, explained that these scholarships reflect Sertoma Club’s commitment to giving back to mankind.
“Sertoma stands for service to mankind, so we’re always looking for ways that we can benefit our community, and giving these scholarships seems like one of the ideal ways to be able to do that,” Brooks said.
The Scholarship Breakfast requires months of planning in advance. Sertoma members secure sponsorships, order food, and arrange schedules. Sausages are typically provided by Fanestil Meats, and sponsors contribute around $8,000 per year.
“It takes an army to do this,” Brooks said. “We’ve got a whole schedule of what we’re supposed to do six weeks in advance, five weeks in advance, and four weeks in advance. We follow our schedule so we know that we don’t forget anything.”
A major focus of the Sertoma Club is helping those with hearing health issues and bringing awareness to hearing loss. Out of the seven scholarships to ESU students, seven scholarships to FHTC, and seven scholarships to ESU School of Nursing, much of that financial aid goes towards Sertoma’s hearing health awareness campaign.
“We just look at health-type scholarships, and that’s where most of our scholarships go,” Brooks said. “Roughly two thirds of our scholarships are going to a health related field.”
Each year, the scholarship breakfast continues to see support from both longtime volunteers and community members.
“It’s a delicious breakfast,” Brooks said. “Once somebody’s eaten here, they typically want to come back. I’ve always said it’s the best breakfast in town on this day.”
