Devin Bond of Severance High School has received the National Merit Scholarship for Texas A&M University.
Officials from sponsor colleges and universities selected more than 2,900 recipients who plan to attend their institution for the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program, according to a National Merit Scholarship Corporation news release. The institution finances the scholarship, which ranges between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.
This year’s cohort of Merit Scholarship awards hail from 146 higher education institutions — 74 private and 72 public — located in 42 states and the District of Columbia.
Texas A&M University, chartered by Congress as the state’s land, sea and space grant university, offers 150 degree programs to undergraduates from all 50 states and more than 100 nations, the release said. The university is placed “among the top 10 producers of sponsored research,” according to the National Science Foundation.
As a college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipient, Bond plans to study nuclear engineering at Texas A&M University.
Bond and other high school students from across the nation entered the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program as juniors when they took the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
More than 16,000 highest-scoring program entrants in each state became semifinalists last fall, the release said. Bond was named a semi-finalist for scoring among the top 1% of the country, according to a Severance High School social media post.
“What an incredible example of the excellence we strive for and celebrate as Silver Knights,” the post said. “We can’t wait to see where this journey takes you, Devin.”
The semifinalists then had to submit a scholarship application, which included an essay and showcased “extracurricular activities, awards and leadership positions,” the release said. The competition required the students to have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed by a high school official and earn qualifying SAT or ACT scores.
Of those semifinalists, 15,000 moved on to reach the finalist status, according to the release. About half will receive Merit Scholarships in 2025.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation will announce additional scholars in July, bringing the 2025 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners to more than 3,600.
