To celebrate and honor the accomplishments of students from math, chemistry, biology, exercise science, equine and adventure leadership majors of the Shaw School of Sciences will host a scholarship and awards banquet. The banquet will take place on April 14 from 6:00 till 8:30 p.m. and will feature the presentation of several awards and scholarships.
“Our students work very hard during their career here at Asbury. None of the majors included in our school are easy,” said Laura Walther, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Asbury University. “We like to take this time to recognize their accomplishments.”
The banquet features a number of awards including the Hammell P. Shipps Medical Science Award, created by Mrs. Betty Snyder Shipps in 1981 which is awarded to a graduating senior who will be entering medical school during the next academic year.
In addition to several awards, scholarships are also awarded at the banquet including the Hamann Memorial Science Scholarship, which awards a student who is “a Christian who commits himself/herself to serving mankind.”
While most of the scholarships and awards are focused on students, the Joe and Carolyn Butler Distinguished Service Award seeks to honor a “full-time faculty or staff member of the biology, chemistry, computer science, math or physics curriculum.” As part of the award, students in the mentioned majors wrote a paragraph on why the professor should receive the award and serves as an opportunity for faculty to be recognized for advancing academic excellence in the classroom.
In addition to the delivery of the awards and scholarships, a guest speaker will be attending the banquet to deliver a few words to attendees.
“This year Dr. Kenton Sena, a 2012 Asbury alum, University of Kentucky Lewis Honors College senior lecturer and recipient of the 2023 Great Teacher Award will be our speaker,” said Walther. “He will share about his journey since leaving Asbury and how God has directed his steps.”
The banquet, open to all students, guests and family members, serves to celebrate and recognize students majoring in programs within the Shaw School of Sciences.
