The 2025 graduating class of Eagle River Secondary (ERS) in Sicamous got a hefty payday this year with a record amount awarded in scholarships, including three from the District of Sicamous.
Council received a letter of appreciation for their contributions at the July 23 meeting, at which Mayor Colleen Anderson recognized the generous support from the rest of the community as well.
“I think it was amazing the amount of money that the community gave to our graduating class this year,” she said. “I think it was somewhere around $50,000 if I’m not mistaken, which is the highest the community’s ever had come together…
“What a great community we live in, and the generosity that our businesses and residents have for the kids, and the hope for the future for these fine young graduates as well.”
Of the amount awarded, the district contributes $2,000 through three scholarships: an academic one for $1,000, and two achievement awards of $500 each.
The top award was given to Hayden Guilbeault, who has been accepted to the Pharmacy Technician Program at Okanagan College (OC) for this fall, while Ornando Lawrence earned one of the others as he begins the Welding Foundations Program, also at OC this fall.
The third recipient, Colson Berukoff will have to wait to put his to use as he’ll continue playing hockey until 2026 when he reaches the minimum age required to enrol in the Heavy Equipment Operator’s Course at IHE in Windfield.
Though announced at graduation in June, the scholarships aren’t actually paid out until the students start their post-secondary program and provide the district with documentation.
