Lee University celebrated the establishment of the Andy Sinclair Scholarship, which is awarded to deserving students who plan to study abroad through Lee’s Global Perspectives program. The scholarship is named after Andy Sinclair, a friend of the University from Northumberland, England, who has partnered with Lee to create Global Perspectives experiences for many years.
The scholarship program was announced at a banquet to mark the occasion and to honor Sinclair’s impact on Lee students through the years. Mr. Sinclair, his wife Cath, and their children were in attendance.
“This was a great celebration of Andy’s contribution to a Lee University core value—global citizenship” said Dr. Jeffery Sargent, director of Global Perspectives and International Programs at Lee. “This scholarship is an opportunity to help students achieve their goals of traveling overseas and studying abroad.”
The Andy Sinclair Scholarship is one of several scholarships offered by the Global Perspectives Office. It is awarded to full-time students at Lee University who have been accepted to a university approved cross-cultural trip. The scholarship considers both a student’s academic performance and financial need, with priority given to students with no previous cross-cultural travel experience.
Mr. Sinclair is the director of Tynedale Group Travel, a travel agency that offers coach and minibus travel in the United Kingdom and Ireland for sports teams and various other organizations. His first tour with Lee was in 1998.
“We’ve been in discussions recently about the future course of our business, and I said then and want to repeat now that no matter who we are working with and how long we continue with our work, we want to be able to work with Lee University students, seeing the look on their faces as they discover the world, till the day we die,” said Mr. Sinclair to the guests in his closing remarks.
The scholarship, which became available in 2023, is awarded to two eligible students each year for a Global Perspectives trip required by Lee University. Global Perspectives trips are cross-cultural trips that aim to help students respect and relate more to the diverse cultures represented in the world. These trips take place throughout the year, including winter, spring, and summer breaks, as well as opportunities to study abroad for a semester.
