CARBONDALE, Ill. – The academic excellence of 37 high achieving high school seniors – including 16 students from the Southern Illinois region – are receiving Southern Illinois University Carbondale 2024 Chancellor’s Scholarships, which cover tuition, mandatory fees, on-campus housing and food for four years.
Today (Feb. 5), Chancellor Austin A. Lane and other university officials paid surprise visits to present the scholarships and congratulate the 16 students from 11 area high schools.
“Chancellor’s Scholars exemplify what it means to be Salukis,” Lane said. “They imagine bold goals and then strive to make them a reality. I am excited to personally congratulate these bright, hard-working students in our own backyard on receiving SIU Carbondale’s highest honor for freshmen.”
Lane presented scholarships to students in Carbondale, Carterville, Herrin, Johnston City, Marion and Murphysboro. Other scholarship recipients in Southern Illinois received surprise personal visits from university officials and Brown Dawg.
The remaining 21 scholarship recipients learned of their awards during a Zoom session today.
There were 640 high school students who competed in the selection process. Selected students demonstrate high academic achievement, have a strong record of leadership in their communities and participate in numerous extracurricular activities. As in prior years, scholarship recipients are from throughout Illinois and the United States.
The award is renewable for three years, contingent upon the students maintaining a 3.0 or higher GPA.
