Six area high school grads awarded scholarships – The Times and Democrat

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Beta Zeta Omega Chapter®, in Orangeburg, recently awarded a total of $12,000 in scholarships to six local high school graduates who are attending college this fall.
Allen
Selection criteria are based on scholastic achievement, character, leadership ability, finer womanhood, and community activities. Financial need is also the basis of three of the scholarships this academic year. Funding for the scholarships comes from the chapter’s annual Calendar Doll Benefit Program.
Goodwine
Teonna Allen, a graduate of Lake Marion High School, was awarded the Academic Achievement Scholarship I. She will attend the University of South Carolina-Columbia where she plans to major in physical therapy. She aspires to become a physical therapist. Teonna is the daughter of Terrence and Sonya Allen.
Glover
Joelle Goodwine, a graduate of Lake Marion High School, was awarded the Academic Achievement Scholarship I. She will attend Clemson University where she plans to major in pharmaceutical science. She aspires to become a pharmacist. Joelle is the daughter of Joe and Evelyn Goodwine.
Harrison
Edriana Glover, a graduate of Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, was awarded the Academic Achievement Scholarship II. She will attend Claflin University where she will major in biology. She aspires to become a neuroscientist. Edriana is the daughter of Edward and Dr. Elrica Glover.
Heape
Kelsey Whetstone, a graduate of the High School for Health Professions, was awarded the Academic Achievement Scholarship II. She will attend South Carolina State University where she plans to major in biology. She aspires to become a pediatric doctor. Kelsey is the daughter of James and Colleen Whetstone.
Whetstone
Elizabeth Heape, a graduate of Branchville High School, was awarded the STEAM Scholarship. She will attend Charleston Southern University, where she plans to major in biology. She aspires to become a physician’s assistant. Elizabeth is the daughter of Brian and Amber Heape.
Hayven Harrison, a graduate of Bethune-Bowman High School, was awarded the Bethune-Bowman Adopt-a-School Scholarship. She will attend Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College, where she will enroll in the physical therapy assistant program. She aspires to continue her studies to become a doctor of physical therapy. Hayven is the daughter of Scotty and Mynita Harrison.

The mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, is to provide service to all mankind. As the first black Greek-letter organization for college-trained women, the AKA’s have provided service in their respective communities since 1908. Locally, Beta Zeta Omega has been serving Orangeburg and surrounding areas for over 90 years. In addition to the high-school scholarships and donations made to local universities, the organization addresses community needs through the 2022-2026 theme Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood with programs in six initiatives: Strengthen Our Sisterhood, Empower Our Families, Build Our Economic Wealth, Enhance Our Environment, Advocate for Social Justice and Uplift Our Local Community.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Beta Zeta Omega, Beta Sigma and Gamma Nu chapters will celebrate the sorority’s 117th Founders’ Day on Sunday, Jan. 26.
Latosha C. Legree serves as the president of Beta Zeta Omega and Gwendolyn Barnes-Brown serves as the High School Scholarships Committee chairperson.
