Six IU Southeast students have been awarded scholarships totaling $9,500 from the Kentucky Society of CPAs (KyCPA).
The KyCPA Educational Foundation awards scholarships to outstanding accounting students enrolled in Kentucky colleges and universities and those attending border schools. These scholarships ease the financial pressures of college and help students focus on reaching their academic and career goals. On average, the society awards $65,000 annually.
To apply for the scholarships, students submitted several short essays, resumes, transcripts, and two recommendations from professors. Scholarship recipients were:
Eric Chew
Olivia Dowell
Nick Fow
Bailee Johnson
Mary Krieg
Anita Sears
Mary Krieg is a non-traditional student and a first-time winner of the award who is completing CPA coursework requirements part-time while working full-time. Krieg is changing her career path toward accounting and chose IU Southeast to further her education in the field.
I had been working in non-profit funding and finance for 7 years, so my professional experience had been accounting-adjacent, and I wanted to pursue professional development and formal education in the field.”
Krieg said she was surprised, excited, humbled, and grateful to have been selected.
She has used the scholarship funds to pay for summer classes, textbooks, and other educational expenses to help her continue her studies. She has about one year of coursework left to complete.
Krieg said she is excited to use the knowledge she’s gained in the classroom and through real-world learning experiences as she moves forward in the accounting field in the Kentuckiana region.
“I look forward to finding work with a local accounting firm in the near future so I can begin to apply what I’ve been learning to the real world and gain experience that will help me prepare for the CPA exams,” said Krieg
The KyCPA’s mission is to empower CPAs of today and tomorrow. In addition to scholarships, the society connects students with resources that bridge the gap between college and career, including mentorship, free CPA exam workshops, and interview days with local employers. The society also offers support through student membership and its Student Ambassador program and recognizes outstanding area accounting students at its fall and spring banquets.
