Home » Six Tanzanian Students Win Scholarships to Alfred University: They need help getting here
From Liz Volk,
Six bright and determined students from Tanzania have been offered a life changing opportunity: full scholarships to attend Alfred University in New York this fall. Yet despite their remarkable academic achievements and the generous financial aid covering tuition and housing, a new challenge stands in their way securing the funds needed for travel and visa processing.
The students, Vedastus Luvuya, Enock Mwesiga, Pius Mtagwa, Ashrafu Ally, Shaban Yasini, and Johnson Jason were selected after a competitive admissions process that recognized their exceptional academic records, leadership, and commitment to community development. Their scholarships will fully cover their tuition, accommodation, and student fees at Alfred University.
Now, with just a few months until the Fall 2025 semester begins, the group is working against the clock to raise the remaining $8,885 needed to cover airfare, visa fees, and reciprocity charges. These expenses, unfortunately, are not included in their scholarship packages.
“We’ve worked hard to earn this opportunity, and we’re incredibly grateful,” said Ashrafu Ally, a graduate of Feza Boys’ High School. “But without help covering the cost of flights and visas, we might not be able to make it to campus this fall.”
Here is a breakdown of their individual needs:
Despite the financial hurdle, the students remain optimistic. They have launched an outreach effort, seeking donations and sponsorships from community members, global education advocates, and anyone who believes in investing in young leaders.
“Education is a powerful tool for change,” said Johnson Jason. “We hope to gain knowledge and skills that we can bring back to Tanzania to uplift our communities.”
