The scholarships were announced during the most recent edition of Martes de Café.
Mauricio Sulaiman, President of the WBC, announced during our traditional Martes de Café that the “Don José Sulaiman” scholarships are now a reality.
The “Don José Sulaiman” scholarship has the sole purpose of removing the financial worries of these young boxers so that they can focus 100% on their boxing careers.
The “Don José Sulaiman” scholarships are sponsored by businessman Emilio López and federal deputy Oscar Bautista. These are monthly scholarships of 10,000 pesos.
Five scholarships were awarded to amateur boxers and one scholarship to a professional boxer at the inauguration of the “José Sulaiman Chagnón” boxing gym, a gym dedicated to the memory of the WBC’s lLifetime President located in Chalco, State of Mexico, Mexico.
The scholarships were awarded to Juan “Güerito de Tepito” Pérez, Gael Razon, Sait Salazar, Ramón Nequiz, and Valeria Pérez, who were the amateur boxers.
Angel Sauceda was the professional boxer who received the scholarship. Angel participated in the first stage of the Riyadh Season Boxing Grand Prix, and although he won his fight, he will not be able to participate in the next stage because he fractured his hand in the third round of his participation in the World Boxing Championships.
During Coffee Tuesday, Mauricio Sulaiman said that this was his father’s dream. The WBC President shared that José Sulaiman had intended to create this scholarship since his time as WBC Leader.
