The SML Lions Club Scholarship Trust awarded nine scholarships this year. Seven of those were four-year scholarships, worth $6,000 each, for students attending colleges or universities. Two of them were transfer scholarships, worth $3,000 each, for students earning an associate degree at Virginia Western Community College before going on to a college or university.
As a group, the nine Scholarship Trust students had excellent grades. They were very active in and out of school. They served the community. They held leadership positions in the organizations they served. They showed strong writing skills in their applications. They earned strong recommendations. Many worked. All had financial need. These scholars persevered and succeeded in spite of the disruptions caused by the pandemic.
Bernard
Jace Benard plans to attend the University of Virginia to study history. He took part in Model United Nations and Marching Eagles and numerous other activities while working 3 years at Rocky Mount Burger. Jace also helped the D-Day Project, Angle Tree, and No-One-Eats-Alone.
Bernard
His twin sister Jordan attended Jostens Renaissance Global Conference for Student Leaders by invitation. She also attended the FCHS Leadership Conference. She was a four-year member and board member of Communities Helping Improve Local Lives (CHILL). She will go to UVa to study biomedical science. Their parents are Kimberly and Timothy Bernard of Wirtz.
Bowman
Julianne Bowman, daughter of Celina and Kevin Bowman of Calloway, will attend Liberty University to major in psychology. Julianne is a star track and cross-country athlete. She earned money as a lifeguard at Furnace Creek Pool and as a counselor at Phoebe Needles Center. She helped with Red Robin Week and collaborated with the police department to try to keep kids off drugs.
Hancock
Colby Hancock is going to study business at Roanoke College. Throughout grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 he worked at Rocky Mount Smokehouse 15 hours a week. He was the starting center for The Junior Varsity and then the Varsity Football Team. Colby Hancock is the son of Reba and Allen Hancock who live in Rocky Mount.
Hasty
Annalyse Hasty, daughter of William Hasty of Hardy, spent three years on the Varsity Outdoor Track and Field and the Fellowship Christian Athletes. She used her musical talents to perform for such charity events as Riding for Tylor, Huddle Up Moms, Healing Strides, and the VT Carilion School of Medicine. She plans to major in music at Virginia Tech.
Holland
Sydney Holland, daughter of Anita Holland of Rocky Mount, plans to double major in communications and international relations at Virginia Tech. During high school she was the student representative to the Franklin County School Board and Head Delicate at Model United Nations. She was on the Principal’s Board and the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Board. Sydney was also the director of the Franklin County High School Morning Show. She worked at Subway and McDonald’s for the last two years.
Hunziker
Faith Hunziker plans to earn an associate degree at VWCC and pursue a psychology major at a Virginia college. She is the daughter of Mary and Brad Hunziker of Hardy. Faith was the treasurer and vice president of the Student Council Association, four-year member of Eagle Excellence, and served with Teens-N-Tots for three semesters. In her senior year she had a four-days-a-week internship in a second-grade classroom at Lee M. Waid Elementary School.
Kelley
Lauren Kelley is the daughter of Dana and Joseph Kelley of Glade Hill. Lauren plans to attend VWCC and continue at Virginia Tech in Engineering. She served in two offices and was Cabinet member for one year on the Student Government Association. She also served on the Franklin County School Board and on the Superintendent Advisory Board. Karen earned money working about 32 hours a week in summer as a Magnum Point Marine hostess. She served as the secretary of the Model United Nations Club.
Quesenberry
Natalie and Steve Quesenberry’s daughter, Moriah, played softball for four years and earned the coach’s Award. She took part in Model United Nations, Scholastic Bowl, Eagle Excellence and the National Student Leadership Conference for Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. She won the Senior Student of the Month Award. Moriah also helped run the Shannon Manning Softball Camps. She earned money as a softball pitching instructor. They live in Penhook.
