Local high school seniors have the opportunity to be awarded up to five scholarships, valued at $2,000 each, from their local business community.
The Solon Chamber of Commerce has announced its 2025 scholarship application period is open. Scholarships are for students who reside in the Solon City School district. However, the students can attend any high school as long as their residence is in the Solon school district, according to Solon Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Marilyn McMillin.
“The Solon Chamber of Commerce is committed to providing connections and programs that invest in the future of our community and contribute to the overall economic prosperity of Solon, Ohio,” Ms. McMillin shared.
“The Solon Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund, Inc would also like to thank our scholarship donors! Because of their generosity, the committee will be accepting applications with intent to award up to (5) five $2,000 scholarships to graduating senior(s) that will be pursuing further education beyond the high school level in any accredited college, university, or vocational program. Proof of enrollment will be required prior to disbursement of funds.”
All Scholarship awards will be paid directly to the recipient and must be used for tuition, books, equipment, and other education related expenses, she said.
This scholarship is non-renewable.
“The Chamber’s Scholarship Committee will choose recipient(s) based on how they feel the recipient(s) will represent the community as determined by the following criteria:
▪ Students’ goals and ambitions
▪ Scholastic achievements (GPA)
▪ Community and volunteer activities
▪School activities,” she added.
To be eligible to receive a scholarship, from the Solon Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund, Inc. students must meet the following criteria:
▪ Be a graduating senior residing in the Solon City School District (Chamber of Commerce employees & family members are not eligible to apply)
▪ Be planning to further their education through an accredited institute/program after graduation
Interested applicants must submit a completed application by the deadline of March 13, 2025, Ms. McMillin stressed.
She said applicants should upload a copy of their complete high school transcript, upload two letters of recommendation – one from a school representative and one from a community member and upload an essay response to the following: “Please tell us about a person in your community that you have a connection with and how that person has impacted you.” (500 Words).
Applications can be uploaded at solonchamber.com.
The selection process will be made by the Scholarship Committee based on the information submitted and their decision is final. If, for any reason, the scholarship recipient is unable to use the scholarship during the ensuing school year, the student forfeits his/her right to the scholarship and must return the awarded amount to the Solon Chamber of Commerce.
Ms. McMillin said the chamber’s scholarship program has been in existence for over 20 years. Funds for the scholarships are raised through private donation, chamber events and fundraisers.
“The Solon Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund, Inc. is committed to preserving a culture of diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity. We embrace and encourage applicants of differences in gender identity, race, national origin, disability, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, and other characteristics that make our community diverse,” she added.
When will the scholarship winners be announced?
According to Ms. McMillin the last day to apply is 3/13/25, with winners being chosen on 4/16/25. Solon High School Seniors do not have their awards presentation until 5/13/25- so those students would be notified then. Others would be notified according to their schools’ award presentation guidelines.
