LIHUE — A female student from the Westside can get an educational boost, announced the Philanthropic Educational Organization, Chapter L-Hawaii.
Applications for the Somer Family Scholarship are available at the www.peokauai.org website under the Somers Scholarship tab. The deadline for the completed applications is Jan. 30.
The $2,000 scholarship in memory of Lois Robinson Somers and Lawrence Hutchinson Somers was established in 2023.
Applicants to the scholarship must be a Westside Kauai woman graduating from high school, or a Westside Kauai woman furthering her post-graduate level education who will be attending an accredited U.S. or Canadian college.
The applicant should exhibit excellence in leadership, academics, extracurricular activities or work life, community service, and potential for future success, preferably on Kauai with an unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher on the 4.0 scale.
Applicants must be a citizen or legal resident of the United States or Canada.
To qualify for the scholarship, students must complete the cover sheet, answer five essay questions, submit a school transcript, and secure two letters of recommendation by the deadline date of Jan. 30.
Applicants will be scored with the top three scorers being interviewed for a final selection. The winner will be announced in early May 2025.
The P.E.O. is a philanthropic organization dedicated to advancing education for women. Since its founding in 1869, the organization has given more than $432 million in scholarships, grants, awards and low-interest loans to help women achieve the scholastic goals.
