GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – A sophomore at Hawthorne Middle/High School is closer to her college dreams.
The College Board’s Big Future Scholarship Program delivered a $40,000 check to Melody Watson.
It’s the first time an Alachua County student has received one through the contest.
Melody built her college list and career list using the free account.
That automatically entered her into a random drawing to win either $500 or $40,000.
The scholarships are given to students who complete specific actions on BigFuture, the College Board’s free online resource.
“First, I was scared to go up there because I’m not, like, used to being in front of a lot of people, but I’m really like happy and excited, and I’m proud of myself for everything I’ve done to get the scholarship,” Melody Watson shared.
Two scholarships for $140,000, and hundreds of $500 scholarships are awarded to students across the country.
No essays, minimum GPAs, or test scores are required to participate.
