LA GRANDE – Soroptimist International of La Grande had a busy June, supporting various organizations throughout the community. Between June 1st and July 3rd, 2025, Soroptimist provided over $9,000 dollars in grants to local organizations.
On June 3, Soroptimist announced via social media that it provided a Community Benefit Grant to the Cook Memorial Library to build a family computer workstation. The set-up features a public access computer with an attached padded floor mat with panels for young children, featuring sensory toys and board books. The workstation allows adults to better access public computers hands free, while providing a safe and fun spot for their children.
On June 16, Soroptimist provided a $1,750 dollar Community Benefits Grant to the annual La Grande Fiddle Club Camp at Birnie Park, helping 38 young musicians receive a week of quality practice, culminating in a performance for friends and family.
On June 17, Soroptimist provided a $5,000 dollar Community Benefits Grant to Babies First! CaCoon. Part of Oregon’s Public Health Nurse Home Visting Program, the grant went toward various safety items, baby essentials, and special adaptive gear.
On July 3, Soroptimist finally announced that they provided a $3,000 dollar community development Grant to Art Center East, offering partial after-school art program scholarships for 520 local K-5 students.
Beyond the grants, Soroptimist also provided $30,000 dollars in scholarships to local students. Union County High School seniors Taylor Bowes, Rachel Stirewalt, Paisley Miller, Natasha Lane, Kylie Brown, Lucy Matthews, Jayda Cant, and Josephine Patton each received a $2,500 dollar award.
In addition, Aspen Smith received a $5,000 dollar senior University Scholarship and Rory Hill received a $2,500 dollar Senior University Scholarship. Finally, Rosie Aguilera received a $2,500 dollar Continuing Education Scholarship along with the first ever $5,000 dollar Gerry Braseth-Palmer Memorial Medical Scholarship to attend Nursing School.
