Sotto donates salary to fund student scholarships – Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — Senate minority leader Vicente Sotto III said he has already turned over his first two months’ salary to help fund scholarships for poor students, delivering on a campaign promise he made during the 2025 senatorial race.
Sotto’s office said the amount was deposited to the account established for the senator’s scholarship program.
“I already received my first two-month salary. Just as I promised during the campaign, I will give this to those needing financial help, in particular to education – to help students struggling in life,” Sotto said in a statement.
He said his office has begun screening applicants for assistance, with one already approved as scholar, five lined up for interviews, and 12 completing requirements.
“With my office, we screened the application of students who submitted,” he said.
Sotto first made the pledge in Pampanga while campaigning for his Senate bid under the administration ticket Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas.
During one of Alyansa’s sorties, he vowed never to keep his salary as a senator, instead channeling it to fund scholarships for poor and deserving students.
“We won’t get even a cent and we will give it to our poor students,” Sotto had declared.
