On June 5, South Dakota’s public universities will launch “605 Day,” a new campaign that colleges officials hope to continue annually to fundraise for student scholarships.
The inaugural event is named for the state’s area code and the date (6/05). Each campus is raising funds with a goal of making college more affordable and accessible for all with the help of alumni, donors and supporters who may donate.
Supporters can share their involvement on social media with #605ForScholarships, and donate at each college’s unique fundraising link online.
Black Hills State University, for example, has a goal to raise $605 each for academics, athletics, music, the university’s greatest needs, music excellence fund and student life. South Dakota Mines has targeted giving destinations for academic, athletic and music scholarships. Both Dakota State University and Northern State University’s sites can take one-time or recurring donations from donors who wish to give to the 605 Day Scholarship.
NSU Foundation President Zach Flakus said the 605 Day fundraiser will provide area students the resources they need to stay in-state to achieve their academic goals, and strengthen the state’s workforce.
Donations to the University of South Dakota’s 605 Day campaign will go to the Coyote Beginnings Fund, a general scholarship fund that “seeks to bridge gaps in students’ financial aid needs.” South Dakota State University’s donation page encourages donors to start a scholarship, give an annual or named gift, or create an endowed scholarship.
USD Foundation President Noah Shepard said each donation, no matter the size, helps to remove financial barriers and opens doors for students “who are ready to lead, serve and make a difference.”
