The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles recently announced that South Pasadena resident and recent Blair High School grad Ella Lesnever received the highest honor in Girl Scouts: the Girl Scout Gold Award and the 2025 Girl Scouts of the USA Gold Award Scholarship.
To earn the Gold Award, Girl Scouts in 10-12th grades spend more than 80 hours identifying an issue, working with local leaders to address the problem, and taking action that leads to measurable change. The Girl Scouts of the USA Gold Award Scholarship recognizes one outstanding Gold Award Girl Scout per council for their leadership, and recipients can use the scholarship toward tuition, fees, books and supplies to continue their education.
To earn these honors, Lesnever’s Gold Award project focused on expanding access to athletics at her Title 1 school, where budget cuts and limited resources had significantly reduced student participation in sports. To address this, she founded Blair Viking Boosters, a nonprofit led by students and parents that raises funds, supports athletic programs and provides a secure place for teams to manage their finances.
As part of her project, Lesnever successfully raised $115,000 and created a reusable grant application process. She also developed a website, hosted multiple fundraising events and established a system for coaches to submit support requests. Her project resulted in the creation of two new sports teams, increased overall student participation, and laid a strong, sustainable foundation for continued support of school athletics.
“Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award and the GSUSA Gold Award Scholarship represent extraordinary leadership and lasting, measurable change in local communities and beyond,” said Theresa Edy Kiene, chief executive officer of GSGLA. “Girl Scout Ella didn’t just imagine change — she is making it happen. Through confidence and compassion, Ella solved a real-world problem and is becoming the leader our world needs. We are immensely proud of Ella’s achievements.”
