MYRTLE CREEK — Lexie Pickering, a South Umpqua High School senior, was recently selected as the top-scoring Oregon female Most Valuable Student (MVS) by the Oregon State Elks Association (OSEA).
Lexie chose Myrtle Creek Elks Lodge #1943 to be her sponsor.
After advancing as a finalist at both the local lodge and South District levels, Lexie was awarded a total of $9,500 in scholarships at the 2025 OSEA Scholarship Awards Banquet held at the Bend Elks Lodge on Feb 22.
Rebekah Sexauer, Lodge Scholarship Committee Chair and Ted Romas, OSEA South District Scholarship Chair, attended the banquet, as did Lexie’s mother, Lea Pickering.
Lexie also automatically qualified to compete for National level Elks scholarship awards of up to $30,000. Lexie has a 4.0 Grade Point Average and will graduate two among 96 classmates. She aspires to a career as an equine sports and medicine veterinarian after attending and graduating from either Oregon State University or Oklahoma State University.
Lexie already has a long list of community service, including being a member of the National Honor Society, the Northwest Youth Rodeo Association and the Oregon High School Rodeo Association. She has also traveled the country with the Leggett Livestock Camps, training kids in livestock showmanship and teaching other valuable skills for animal care and agriculture.
While just 17, Lexie has demonstrated that she is not only an outstanding student, but also a natural leader, a counselor, a trainer and a teacher who selflessly gives of herself to teach her peers how to improve their performance and overcome personal challenges. Lexie lives in Myrtle Creek with her parents and has an older sister, Saydee, who received a 2023 MVS scholarship award. They all strongly support her educational, career and personal goals, as does the Myrtle Creek Elks Lodge.
