LOGAN, W.Va. — Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College is announcing they have exceeded the $50,000 goal for a scholarship given to first responders in memory of a fallen state police officer.
The scholarship honors the late Sgt. Cory Maynard who was tragically killed in the line of duty on June 2, 2023 in Mingo County.
The Southern Foundation created an annual softball tournament centered around the Sgt. Cory Maynard Scholarship to raise funds for the scholarship that had a goal of $50,000. The college’s Development Coordinator Crystal Cook said in a statement that they were extremely pleased to have exceeded it and honor Maynard and his family in this way.
“I have developed strong relationships with Cory’s family and local law enforcement since working on this scholarship. They have always held a special place in my heart, but those ties are strengthened even more,” Cook stated.
Chief External Affairs Officer Robert “Stacy” Dingess stated that it has been an honor for SWVCTC to give back in this way because Sgt. Maynard gave so much to everyone else.
“It’s a privilege for me personally to be involved in creating a lasting memorial in honor of a man who did so much for our community,” said Dingess.
The college held the 2nd Annual Sgt. Cory Maynard Softball Tournament in August in Logan County. Anthony Stollings and Joshua Smith were the first to receive the scholarships.
