Southgate Rotary awarded three college scholarships to local students. Each student was awarded a $1,000 scholarship to further their education. Students were our guests at our lunch meeting on Thursday, June 19, at the Downriver Community Credit Union.
The scholarship recipients are Southgate Anderson High School students: Sophie Kuryliw, Wayne State University, Maria Saaidi, U-M Dearborn and Gabriel Richard High School, Luciana Cowell, Madonna College. Students are asked to submit an essay on the Rotary Motto: Service Above Self and how they volunteer in their community. A committee reviews the essays, students who best exemplify the motto are awarded the scholarship.
Each year, we host the State of the City luncheons for Southgate and Riverview. Proceeds from those events fund the scholarships. We are grateful to our communities for supporting these events as well as Southgate Mayor Joseph Kuspa and Riverview Mayor Andrew Swift.
President Kevin Bowlby said, “We congratulate these students for exemplifying the Rotary Motto: Service Above Self. We wish them success in their future endeavors.”
