Southside High School is sending two more student-athletes to the next level.
Football players Amadrion Smith and Cody Brown signed on Tuesday, Feb. 11, letters of intent to play football next year after graduation. Smith signed with Allen College while Brown will be headed to Omega Prep.
Head coach Charles Moody said it’s a great accomplishment for the program to have four players sign scholarships, including Derick “Duke” Smith and Erick Smith who signed with Auburn in December.
“It’s something that we want to continue to do here,” Moody said. “It’s a goal all the time, and we are just happy we are able to assist these kids in their future endeavors.”
Moody said Amadrion is one of the players every coach wants to have.
“He’s a country boy that’s really a blue-collar type of kid, the type you want around your environment,” Moody said. “But at the same time, he’s a fun kid who’s going to add good energy to your locker room, and he’s going to be a great player for them.”
Amadrion said he was excited to sign a scholarship because he fulfilled a dream of his father, Jerome Waters.
“He wanted me to go to college,” Amadrion said. “He played sports too. He was pretty good.”
Brown said that Omega Prep will help him get to the next level. He’s excited for the opportunity to continue football after high school.
“It means a lot because we are from Selma and a lot of folks don’t make it,” Brown said. “It means a lot to me because I was one of the few that was able to make it.”
Moody said he’s seen Brown step up this year.
“Cody is strong,” Moody said. “He comes off the ball well and he’s really motivated to do a lot of great things and prove people wrong. So I like his particular motivation, and it comes out in his play.”
Amadrion, who moved to Southside this year from Dallas County, said Moody and the team made him feel welcome. A highlight of his career was being a part of this year’s semifinal team.
“They treated me like I’ve been here for the last four years, and I had a great time,” Amadrion said. “We all locked in, stayed tuned in, and were able to make it to the semifinals.”
Brown thanked Moody and Principal Cedric Brown for pushing him to get better as a player, student and person.
“They are probably one of the best coaches and best principals I’ve ever had.” Brown said. “They helped me with my grades and academics. He (Moody) was like, ‘You’ve got to work a little harder here. You got to do a little better than that. I expect more out of you.’ He pretty much just influenced me to do better.”
