The Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee’s annual fundraiser cookout took place at Bayliss Park on May 10, 2024. All money raised from the luncheon will fund scholarships for area students looking to study agriculture in college.
The Southwest Iowa Educational Foundation awarded hundreds of southwest Iowa high school students with scholarships on Thursday, May 16, during its annual recognition event.
It was another record year for the nonprofit organization dedicated to soliciting, managing and awarding scholarships, in partnership the Community Foundation of Western Iowa, according to a news release.
This year, 136 students received more than $545,000 in scholarships toward their college educations.
“SWIEF is able to provide a financial benefit to many students this year, and that is due in large part to the generosity of Southwest Iowa community members that establish scholarships, make contributions, and share our mission throughout the region,” Cara Cool-Trede, president of SWIEF, saind in a release.
“Because of this network, SWIEF is awarding our largest dollar amount to date, truly making post-secondary education more attainable and affordable for many deserving students, which is our ultimate goal,” Cool-Trede said.

Not only do scholarships offer a financial boost for students to earn a degree, credential or certificate, but they also create a sense of commitment to fulfilling a dream for many first-generation students.
Recipients represented 25 high schools throughout southwest Iowa with the average award amount of about $4,000.
