BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The annual PJ Wilson and Henry Scott Youth Golf Camp awards ceremony celebrated the legacy that the founders began 30 years ago.
With family members of founders PJ Wilson, Henry Scott and Roosevelt Jackson in attendance, the ceremony held a special place for many of the long-time volunteers.
“This has been by far the biggest camp we have hosted and I know PJ and Henry are looking down and proud of this event and how it has continued to carry on,” said Jamie Howell who is the Eastern Florida State College golf coach and been at the camp for the past 28 years. “It doesn’t happen without all of you, the parents, the grandparents and all of the volunteers here today.”
Hunter Page was one of the golfers honored on Thursday, receiving a two-year academic scholarship to Eastern Florida State College.
“I was not expecting this,” Page said. “This is going to open up a brand new chapter in my life and I can’t wait to get started.”
Page is a rising senior at Space Coast Christian Academy and has been involved with the golf camp for the past two years. The Titusville resident is excited to begin his college experience at Eastern Florida State College with an eye on Engineering.
“I have met so many new friends and have learned that there is so much more to golf than just swinging a club here the last two years, I get to meet new friends and just have fun,” Page said.
Every camper received a certificate of achievement, snacks, and a Chik-Fil-A box and coaches also recognized three standouts for each of the three groups.
In the Beginner group, the Most Improved went to Londyn Pelletier with Constance Moore named the Best Attitude and Louis Hartman had the Best Sportsmanship.
In the Intermediate group, Adrian Novak was the Most Improved and the Best Attitude was Chandler Carnes and Liam Arellano has the Best Sportsmanship.
In the Experienced group, Sabal O’Hagan was the Most Improved with Juan-Diego Jordan had the Best Attitude and the Best Sportsmanship award went to Layson Lombardi.
Christopher Arrone talked to the group about life lessons and GOLF – Gathering, Obedience, Legacy (Love) and Fun.
■ Gathering – “It is so important to pay attention to what you are collecting, what things are you learning and taking in.”
■ Obedience – “Decision you make today will influence you 15-20 years from now.”
■ Legacy – “30 years! That is a legacy that these gentleman left, what will be your legacy?”
Fun – “Life will go by fast, you have to have fun! Have fun with something you love to do and have a passion in everything that you do.”
Dr. Michael Cadore, the Executive Director of Community Engagement at Eastern Florida State College, was the master of ceremonies and helped with the camp.
“Thank you all for being a part of this, this camp is a special event because of all of you. You make it special. And none of this is possible without the tremendous support of our president Dr. Jim Richey, the administration and the Athletic Director Jeff Carr.”
The youth golf camp has been helping teach youth the basic skills of golf, including golf etiquette, conduct, sportsmanship, as well as values for a successful living since 1992 when former President Dr. Maxwell King started it with the assistance of Henry Scott and P.J. Wilson, who were two minority golf professionals in Brevard County.
