Significant financial help toward college tuition is now available for high-achieving, under-resourced Spartanburg County students with the expansion of the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund to the county.
The expansion was made possible through an initial $40 million commitment from local philanthropists Susu and George Dean Johnson Jr. It will cover up to $40,000 in college tuition, fees, housing and food for five graduating classes of eligible Spartanburg County students.
The expansion was announced Nov. 14 during an event at the Chapman Cultural Center that brought together hundreds of students, educators and community leaders.
The move is part of Meeting Street Scholarship Fund’s Mission 46 initiative which seeks to make scholarships available in all 46 South Carolina counties.
The Spartanburg expansion is significant as the county is the fifth largest county in the state. The scholarship was awarded to an initial 398 students for 2024 and expected to go to about 200 students annually.
Philanthropists Ben and Kelly Navarro launched the scholarship in 2021 for Charleston County students, and the Darla Moore Foundation expanded it later that year to eight Pee Dee counties.
The scholarship will be available to students in 13 counties starting in 2025.
The Meeting Street Scholarship Fund is a last-dollar scholarship program, designed to cover the gap between what a student receives in scholarships and financial aid and what they still need to attend college.
Students must meet five criteria to receive the scholarship:
