Two Slippery Rock University civil engineering majors were among six college students recognized and awarded scholarships by the American Society of Civil Engineers, Pittsburgh Section.
Amber Maurer, a senior civil engineering major from Cowansville, received the American Bridge Leadership Award.  Maurer received a $9,000 scholarship, recognizing outstanding leadership in civil engineering. The scholarship was supported by a donation from American Bridge, a civil engineering company, to the ASCE Pittsburgh Section’s Student Awards Foundation.
Amina Tandukar, a sophomore civil engineering major from Kathmandu, Nepal, received a $1,000 Merit scholarship. Her award also recognized an outstanding civil engineering student and was supported by the Student Awards Foundation.
Both Maurer and Tandukar are active in the engineering program and have contributed to multiple research projects, including a project titled “Comparative Analysis of Synthetic Fiber in cement-based Composite: Impact on Mechanical properties,” that they presented at an international conference last year.
Maurer and Tandukar were recognized for their scholarships at the ASCE Engineers Week Banquet, Feb. 22, in Pittsburgh, and were accompanied by Iuri Santos, SRU assistant professor of engineering. Students from schools such as Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh were eligible for the awards.
The ASCE Pittsburgh Section is a professional association with more than 1700 members and represents engineering and construction interests for communities throughout western Pennsylvania.
More information about SRU’s engineering programs is available on the department’s webpage.
