MARYVILLE, Mo. — A love for nursing and a lifetime commitment to delivering quality health care has led Billye McCrary and her husband, Ron, to create an endowed scholarship through a $35,000 gift to the St. Francis Foundation in support of educating current and future nurses.
According to a news release from the foundation, Billye McCrary was born at the original St. Francis Hospital and raised in Maryville. She grew up with big aspirations for a career in nursing. From humble beginnings as a candy striper working alongside the sisters, she graduated high school and moved to Oklahoma City to attend St. Anthony’s School of Nursing, where she obtained her registered nursing credentials. A strong believer in lifelong learning and education, she went on to obtain her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Northwest Missouri State University in 1984.

She began her career in nursing at St. Francis Hospital in 1968 and worked in many positions over the years from leading the intensive care unit to teaching in the licensed practical nursing program at Northwest Technical School, eventually retiring as director of quality in 2016, noted the release. Throughout her career, providing quality patient care has been McCrary’s life purpose and she inspired those that worked with her to carry that same devotion.
Under her leadership and tenure, the hospital earned three Missouri Quality Awards. McCrary also supported SSM Health to become the first health care organization to receive the Malcom Baldridge National Quality Award in 2002.
Although she no longer works as a nurse, her guidance and mentorship will still help caregivers through the Ron and Billye McCrary Scholarship for Nursing Excellence, the release stated.

The foundation will begin accepting scholarship applications in August.
