STAMFORD, CT — Stamford High School senior Reid Knorr has been named the recipient of the 2025 Scott Mitchell Scholarship, SoundWaters announced this week.
The $1,000 annual award recognizes a student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a strong commitment to environmental protection.
Knorr became involved with SoundWaters in the summer of 2023 through the organization’s Research Intensive program, where he conducted hands-on scientific work focused on plankton. One of his most memorable experiences, he said, was designing and executing an experiment on how temperature changes affect phytoplankton populations.
“Being able to run an experiment that I designed with my lab partner felt very empowering as a young person in the scientific field,” Knorr said in an announcement from SoundWaters. “I don’t think I would have had the opportunity to run such an experiment in high school without the help of SoundWaters and their amazing education staff.”
In addition to his scientific pursuits, Knorr has taken an active role in environmental advocacy and education. He helped launch Stamford’s chapter of Fridays for Future, engaging with local lawmakers to support climate policy, and volunteers at the Wolf Conservation Center in New York, where he helps care for the wolves and educates visitors about conservation efforts.
Knorr plans to study environmental science this fall at the University of Southern Maine.
The Scott Mitchell Scholarship was created in 2019 in honor of longtime SoundWaters board member Scott Mitchell, a Greenwich resident who chaired the organization’s Board of Directors from 2013 to 2018. Mitchell is recognized for his leadership and dedication to environmental stewardship, values the scholarship seeks to foster in young people.
SoundWaters is a nonprofit environmental education organization based in Stamford.
