Sterlington, La. (KNOE) – Sterlington Police Department awarded scholarships to Sterlington High School students at an awards ceremony on Thursday, May 8.
Two students were awarded scholarships from the David Elahi Memorial Scholarship program. Officials say Officer David Elahi was killed on duty, and they hope to honor him by passing down a scholarship for students with parents that are also in the line of duty or who are looking to attend a two year college just as Late Officer Elahi did.
Students were awarded $750 each to support their future college careers.
Sterlington Police Department Interim Police Chief, Cobi Brown says they raise money for the scholarships through donations and fundraisers each year.
He says, “In the many stories that I’ve heard about him, he was a great guy, and super nice and so we just want to keep that memory alive, right. We collect money for the scholarships just from donations whether it’s a a business or a private entity or fundraisers that we try to put on throughout the year. All of that money either goes into the scholarship fund which comes first and then if we have extra funds that goes into our Santa stops that everybody enjoys us doing every December.”
The Sterlington Police Department says they plan to continue the program for years to come.
