STONINGTON — The Stonington Garden Club has awarded two $1,000 scholarships to Stonington High School seniors who are pursuing studies in Environmental Sciences in college. The scholarships were presented to Matthew Hryn and Marra LaCour at the SHS Senior Awards night in June.
“One of the purposes of the Stonington Garden Club is to encourage and support interest in conservation and the environment. These scholarship awards were created to do just that by recognizing and supporting high school seniors interested in environmental sciences,” SGC co-president Jill Corr said.
The club’s history with the environmental sciences department at Stonington High has included giving funds for materials needed for their outdoor gardens, but the club wanted to do more. Determined to help and encourage local high school students, the club worked closely with the SHS science faculty and the officers of the club to establish a scholarship award for a graduating senior in the spring of 2017.
Now in its eighth year, the garden club offers two $1,000 scholarships: an Environmental Studies Award and Environmental Awareness Award.
“In these challenging times for climate-related causes, today’s high school students are increasingly concerned with environmental issues and the impact of climate change,” Scholarship Committee Chair Terri Brennan said. “We are proud to offer awards that recognize a focus on the environment and encourage further studies in this critically important field.”
The recipient of the Environmental Awareness Award, Matthew Hryn, made it his mission in high school to expand his knowledge and impact on the environment. Hryn founded the SHS Environmental Club, participated in annual Environmental Expos, worked to implement recycling within the school, and constructed a pollinator pathway on campus. At Northeastern University, he has begun a program in Environmental Engineering.
Environmental Studies Award recipient Marra LaCour took various biology and environmental studies classes at SHS that sparked her interest in the human impact on the environment.
She was the teacher’s assistant in the AP Environmental Science class during her senior year and completed the Marine Science Mentorship Program at the Mystic Aquarium last fall.
LaCour has begun her studies at the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Vermont.
Founded in 1926, the Stonington Garden Club is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization whose purpose is to educate and encourage interest in the environment and conservation, support community projects, and stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening. For 100 years, the club has had a lasting and positive impact on the community, and its members take great pride in the Stonington community and its environs.
