Special to The Herald
Halifax County Schools announced Monday that Hailey Harrison has been awarded the prestigious Ethel Crawley Scholarship.
According to a press release, her selection as an Ethel Crawley Scholarship recipient reflects her commitment to academic excellence and her positive impact working within the Haliwa-Saponi community as a youth ambassador. Hailey plans to attend UNC-Greensboro in the fall.
“I am truly blessed to receive the Ethel Crawley Scholarship,” Hailey said in the release. “I plan on using the scholarship to pursue a career in psychiatry at UNC-G. Coming from a small, Native community with limited resources has been hard. I want to give back to my community for all it has poured into me. Thank you for this opportunity.”
The Ethel Crawley Scholarship is awarded annually to a Halifax County student who exhibits exemplary academic performance and a commitment to community service. This scholarship aims to support students in their pursuit of higher education, encouraging them to achieve their full potential and contribute positively to society.
The scholarship directs a scholarship selection committee to award a full four-year scholarship that covers tuition, room, board, school fees, books, and other supplies.
Ethel Crawley, who died April 11, 1998, did not want finances to be a barrier for a student getting a college education when she established the scholarship. She was a lifelong resident of Littleton, teaching music for 28 years at Littleton High School.
