Have you ever seen Rena Norcross without a beautiful smile? I remem- ber meeting Rena oh so many years ago, not long after I started writing this column. She and her husband, Mark, hosted many events in her home, including a reception for the Miss North Carolina USA contestants. They also hosted a reception for the guest speaker for their annual MS Luncheon that raised millions of dollars for research. I accidentally arrived early for one of those events and remember her sprightly searching for those last-minute touches to make the reception perfect. Then she showed me a few rooms of their beautiful home, including the fact that it was specially designed for her and her illness. I was and still am in awe of her grace, beauty, passion and compassion.
I could hardly believe that she had multiple sclerosis. I didn’t want to believe it. Today Rena still exudes that inner and outer beauty as she navigates with her scooter. One would think that Rena would just sit back since the end of the MS Luncheons, but that is not Rena Norcross. Her passion continues, and those who know her know she is extremely patriotic (as we all should be). She is an active member of the Alexander Martin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. So, what did Rena do next? She established the Rena Norcross DAR Legacy Scholarship.
