Ten metro high school singers competed Sunday in KC SuperStar, the leading high school singing contest and main fundraiser for the Jewish Community Center.
The students performed at Yardley in the Midwest Trust Center at Johnson County Community College.
Grammy and Tony Award winner Shoshana Bean hosted the Finals.
KMBC 9’s Krista Tatschl was one of the judges. The panel of judges selected the top four contestants, and the audience chose the winner of a $10,000 scholarship.
Rayna Key took home the top prize. Aubree Smith earned a $5,000 scholarship for second place. Matt Brun won $2,500 for third place, and Devin Fisher took home $1,000 for fourth.
Jim Sluyter, the CEO and president of the Jewish Community Center, said the highlight of the night is seeing the camaraderie from the students.
“It’s amazing seeing the bonding these kids do together. They’re all backstage together, hugging each other, and getting pumped up for this performance. Just seeing the kids from all different walks of life is wonderful,” he said.
Funds go toward scholarships that help individuals and families across the center’s extensive facilities and programs. This is the 16th year of KC SuperStar. Organizers usually hold auditions in the spring.
