COVINGTON, GA – Six local students were awarded scholarships yesterday at the fifth annual Judge Horace J. Johnson, Jr. Beyond the Bar Scholarship Foundation Drive, Chip and Putt tournament.
Amateur golfers took to the course at the Ashton Hills Golf Club in Covington to raise money for graduating high school seniors from Rockdale, Newton and Walton Counties. 
The tournament raised a total of $30,000 for six top students chosen by the Beyond the Bar Foundation. Each student was awarded a $5,000 scholarship.
The scholarship recipients include:
·        Christian Bridges of Heritage High School in Conyers, who will attend UGA 
·        Ethan Barlay of Rockdale Magnet School, who will Brown University
·        Sophie Farmer of Loganville High School, who will attend UGA
·        Lily Lin of Loganville High School, who will attend Emory
·        Darren White of Eastside High School in Covington, who will attend GA Tech
·        Robby Thomas, Jr. Eastside High School in Covington, who will attend GA Tech
After the students received their scholarships, players received gracious awards for their top scores. The awards were presented by Beyond the Bar Foundation President Cheveda McCamy, who serves as a judge in the Alcovy Judicial Circuit, and Fox 5 Atlanta meteorologist Jonathan Stacey. 
Some of the prizes included a UGA Football helmet signed by Coach Kirby Smart, Atlanta Braves tickets and gift basket, a behind the scenes tour of UGA’s Sanford Stadium and gift cards to Top Golf, Yellow River Ale House, @Local Coffee, the Soap Box and other businesses.
The foundation is a collaborative effort between the New Rock Legal Society and the Bar Associations from Newton, Rockdale and Walton Counties.
The four bar associations formed the foundation in 2019 as a way for local attorneys to give back to local youth and to honor the late Judge Horace J. Johnson, Jr. who passed away in 2020. Judge Johnson, who served as Superior Court Judge in the Alcovy Judicial Circuit from 2002 until his death, was a champion of community service.
In total the foundation has awarded $70,000 in scholarships since the foundation’s inception.
