THE BALTIMORE SUN — Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ Advancement Via Individual Determination program, better known as AVID, brought in nearly $111.4 million in scholarship offers this year — a 33.6% increase from last year.
The program helps students succeed in school and prepare for their careers by focusing on academic support, skill development and fostering a “college-going” culture. Students develop academic skills through curricula that teach writing strategies and prepare them for college by guiding them through the application process and campus visits.
“Whether they knew what they wanted to do or not, they knew they were going to do something,” said Jordan Pickett, Glen Burnie High School’s AVID site coordinator. “Each and every one of them came out of their shells over the last few years.”
