On May 1 the Tracy Sunrise Rotary Club awarded nine $1,000 scholarships, supporting local high school seniors moving into the next chapter of their lives. Every year the club awards scholarships named after former members.
The funding for the scholarships comes from events that the club hosts, including the 31st Annual Shrimp Dinner and Auction held on April 27, and member donations.
The George P. Stein vocational scholarship offered is named after the club’s former secretary, who was also a member of the local school board. The scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to graduates who are planning to attend trade schools. It was created “to give them a little boost” and to enforce worth within blue collar jobs. Those awards went to:
• Gabriella Orellana, a senior at West High, plans to attend the University of San Francisco, majoring in pre-health/nursing and health professions, following in her father’s footsteps to join the medical field.
• West senior Cameron Williams plans to attend California State University Northridge or San Jose State University, majoring in kinesiology, and minoring in business.
• West High senior Sashank Kala is planning to attend UC Berkley or UC San Diego majoring in computer science and engineering.
The Wanda Sullivan Community Service Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who have been actively involved with community service and the Tracy Boys & Girls Club, which was one of Wanda’s preferred causes to support the youth in the town. Recipients of that scholarship include:
• Sisters Sydney and Bailey Thornton, both West High seniors, plan to attend Stanislaus State University, Sonoma State University, California State University, or USC Sacramento.
• Kaelyn Grace Garcia, a West High senior, plans to attend San Joaquin Delta College and will major in nursing.
The Jack Sjolin Health Professionals Scholarship is named for a prominent dentist in Tracy and one of the charter members of the club. The scholarship is awarded to those who have a desire to help mankind in a health-related field.
• Kimball High senior Genoveva Villagomez carries a GPA of 4.5 and is ranked 20th in her class. She will major in biochemistry and has been accepted to U.C. Davis and San Jose State University, but is undecided where she attend.
• Tania Nayyar, a senior at Kimball High, is planning to attend UC Davis to study neurobiology, physiology, and behaviorial sciences. She has a GPA of 4.39 and is ranked 19th at her school.
• Beatrice Egbuchulam, a senior at Kimball High, plans to study psychology, pre-biopsychology and cognitive science. She has been accepted to 14 colleges and has yet to decide which one she will attend.
