The Rotary Club of Tracy Sunrise awarded nine $1,000 scholarships at its April 30 meeting at Four Corners Restaurant. The scholarships honor former Tracy Sunrise Rotarians and their passion for helping high school seniors pursue their educational and career goals.
The club raises the money for the scholarships through member contributions, which go into the club’s own foundation.
The George P. Stein Vocational Scholarship goes to seniors who intend to pursue training or certification in professions that don’t necessarily require a college degree. The award honors Stein’s long career with H.J. Heinz in Tracy, and his passion for training the next generation to work in local businesses and industry.
This year the club handed out one George Stein Scholarship to Themis Casillas. She is a senior at Tracy High, and plans to attend Monterrey Institute of Technology in Mexico to study global business. She has studied and developed projects related to neurological effects of bilingual language learners and is learning to speak multiple languages.
The Wanda Sillivan Community Service Scholarship goes to seniors who have demonstrated their commitment to service, typically through the Boys & Girls Club of Tracy, of which Wanda was a big supporter.
That scholarship went to Ty Banchero, West High, who plans to attend the University of Oregon to study military science and enroll in the college’s Reserve Officer Training Corps. He has held multiple leadership roles at West High, including Class President all 4 years, and Air Force Junior ROTC.
The Dr. Jack Sjolin Health Professions Scholarship, named for a Tracy dentist and an original founder of Tracy Sunrise Rotary Club in 1985, goes to seniors who intend to pursue careers in the medical or health care fields. Recipients included:
Asiya Haswarey attends California Virtual Academy at San Joaquin and plans to study psychology at U.C. Davis or at San Joaquin Delta College. Her community service includes fostering cats for East of Eden Animal Rescue, and she also participates in the Tracy Friends of the Library Poetry Contest.
Carl Miranda is a senior at Tracy High and plans to study nursing at Azusa Pacific University. He is on the Tracy Unified School District Student Advisory Committee, as well as the Tracy High boys volleyball team and E-sports team.
Diego Cervantes, Millennium High School, plans to attend University of California, Los Angeles, or University of Southern California to major in bioengineering or biomedical research. He is the founder of Smarteez Math Tutoring, and competes on Millennium High’s soccer and cross country teams.
Melanie Yanke, Tracy High, plans to major in psychology, and has yet to chose a college. She is involved in Future Farmers of America, and competes on Tracy High’s golf and softball teams.
Tanusha Kolli, a senior at West High, plans to study molecular and cell biology at the University of California, and is considering the Davis, San Diego or Los Angeles campuses. She volunteers with Hindu Community and Cultural Center Health Clinics as a translator, and with Animal Rescue of Tracy.
Tanya Singh, West High, plans to study molecular, cellular and developmental biology at U.C. San Diego. While in high school she has served as president of California Scholarhship Federation and as the program, service and administrator chair for the Sikh Honors and Service Society.
Wesley Distrajo, West High, plans to study human biology at U.C. Davis. He has served as a volunteer at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital while also participating in his school’s robotics club while also training and competing in martial arts.
