Auto draftThe Linda J. Marincel Scholarship has been established in honor of SWE member Linda J. Marincel in order to encourage and enable women to pursue education in the technical and engineering fields that have been traditionally dominated by men.
Beginning fall 2025, one $15,000 scholarship will be awarded to a sophomore, junior or senior in any engineering related major, starting with academic year 2026-2027. The scholarship is renewable for two years after the initial award. Student must maintain a 3.25 GPA and remain in engineering to apply for scholarship renewal.
Linda was one of seven women graduates at the University of Minnesota Institute of Technology (now the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering) in June 1970 when she received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics (computer science degrees weren’t available then).
She was employed at AT&T in computer system development and worked her way from computer programmer to manager, earning an MBA from Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Missouri along the way. During the Bell System breakup in 1984, she accepted a buyout to leave AT&T after 17 years, planning to take a year off work before continuing to pursue her career.
“I enjoyed my freedom from employment and found I could live on much less money and support myself with stock market investments, part-time employment, and a part-time business,” Linda had said about that experience. All these endeavors, supported by her education, enabled her retirement in Utah, where she enjoyed skiing and the mountain environment.
In her estate plan, Linda wrote, “I would like to support scholarships for women to pursue their goals in the engineering fields and encourage them to use their talents to advance women in the areas of business and technology with the goal of gender equality in pay and recognition in the future.”
Linda was a recipient of scholarships in her freshman and senior years, and the Linda J. Marincel Scholarship is established to help women students in these fields of study.
