Syracuse football has been busy on the recruiting trail, adding 25 high school/junior college players to its roster for the 2024 season and 15 more incoming transfers to date. On top of that, several more players have entered the transfer portal during the spring window while several more were left off of the spring roster. With all of that turnover including Syracuse adding multiple high profile transfers over the last few weeks, where does that put the Orange in terms of scholarships available? Here is our overall breakdown.
Scholarship players returning: 44
Incoming 2024 recruits: 25
Incoming transfers: 15
Total: 84
NCAA Limit: 85
Currently available: 1
For the full breakdown of the numbers above, including a full list of players in each category and scholarship breakdown by position, that is also listed below.
Keep in mind, the portal window is currently open until April 30th. Up until that point, more Syracuse players could leave. If that were to happen, it would open up scholarships for the Orange to pursue transfers from other schools to round out the roster. There has already been a report that Syracuse is pursuing Alabama transfer defensive back Terrance Howard, who is supposed to take an official visit next week. If more players leave, that of course allows Syracuse to pursue other options and improve its roster. Something the Orange has done a good job at to this point, as the roster looks vastly improved from a year ago including significantly more depth at key positions. It would not be a surprise if a few more players entered the portal before the window closes.
Here are the players listed in each category:

Note: Those listed in the “Class of 2024 Recruits” category include only high school and junior college recruits in the 2024 recruiting class who have committed to and/or signed with Syracuse football. It does not include players coming to the Orange from the transfer portal. Those players are listed in the section below.
Duce Chestnut
Fadil Diggs
Devin Grant
Isaiah Hastings
Yazeed Haynes
James Heard
Codie Hornsby
Clarence Lewis
Kyle McCord
Jackson Meeks
Joshua Miller
Justus Ross-Simmons
Savion Washington
Da’Metrius Weatherspoon
Dion Wilson
Note: Syracuse is also linked to Alabama transfer cornerback Terrance Howard, who will reportedly visit the Orange next week for an official visit. Syracuse may also look for a quarterback in the transfer portal. Someone to come in and compete for the backup job this season behind Kyle McCord, but with multiple years of eligibility to compete for the starting job in 2025 after McCord leaves. Remember, McCord only has one year of eligibility remaining.
Quarterback: 4
Running Back: 3
Wide Receiver: 11
Tight End: 6
Offensive Line: 19
Defensive Line: 13
Linebacker: 10
Defensive Back: 15
Specialists: 3
Total: 84
It is not unusual for a team to be heaving along the lines of scrimmage nor at wide receiver and defensive back. However, there may be a few more at offensive line than would be ideal. One could see a couple more offensive linemen electing to leave and Syracuse using those scholarships to address running back, quarterback, and/or defensive tackle.
