Family, friends and community members came together on Saturday to honor the life of Staff Sgt. Tanner Grone.
About 170 runners showed up to the inaugural Tanner Grone Memorial 5K in Gorham.
Grone was one of five U.S. Special Operations aviation soldiers to die in a crash, which occurred in November 2023 while the MH-60 Blackhawk helicopter was conducting a routine training flight near Cyprus.

His family told News 9 that the scholarship was established to honor his legacy and give back to his community.
“His best friend started a scholarship fund right after the accident, so the goal was to figure out how to keep it going,” said Grone’s sister Emily Lemoine. “That will then fund Gorham high school seniors who are going into either the trades or the military.”
Saturday’s event raised around $12,000 for the Staff Sgt. Tanner Grone Memorial Award.
