The scholarship, established by Clarke’s mother in July 2022, awards at least one African American female planning to major in mass communication, print journalism, broadcast journalism, or public relations a scholarship to attend the college or university of their choice. Donations are urgently needed before the upcoming Scholarship Reception on May 13, 2025.
“Shatanya’s passion for journalism was matched only by her commitment to uplifting her community,” said Tasha Witter, Shatanya’s mother. “This scholarship allows her spirit to continue inspiring young women who share her dream. Every donation, no matter the size, helps ensure Shatanya’s legacy lives on through the next generation of Black female journalists.”
Born in Jamaica, Shatanya Clarke joined KFDX in August 2018 as a news reporter before moving into the anchor chair in 2021. Beyond her professional achievements, Clarke made a significant impact in Wichita Falls through her volunteer work with the Junior League, her role on the Child Care Partners’ board, and her mentorship of young girls at Booker T. Washington Elementary School. She created the annual “Soups and Socks” fundraiser with Brandon Cooper, benefiting Faith Mission.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Clarke hosted the weekly “Helping the Helpers” series, which raised funds for local charities and highlighted community organizations’ positive impact in Wichita Falls.
Thanks to generous community support, the scholarship has already awarded $5,000 to deserving students in both 2023 and 2024. The Clarke family hopes to continue this tradition with another award at the upcoming Scholarship Reception on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at 5:30 PM at Region 9 ESC.
Community members, businesses, and organizations interested in contributing to the Shatanya Larger Than Life Scholarship can do so online at https://bit.ly/ShatanyaScholarship or by contacting Nikki Davis at ndavis@wfisd.net. All donations must be received by May 1st, 2025, to be applied toward this year’s scholarship award.
