TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – The Tyler-Smith County Texas Exes Alumni Chapter held their annual scholarship banquet Saturday evening.
Every year, scholarships are awarded to a select group of East Texans as they enter their fresman year. The featured speaker this time was a good one: Texas Longhorn Michael Taffe.
Taaffe has a great story – a walk-on who worked his way to second team all-American. He’s been recognized for his work ethic and being a gamer. His message? “Never quit.”
“It takes a lot of work. Nothing’s ever going to be handed to you, especially at a university that’s as good as the University of Texas is,” Taaffe said. “You are competing against champions every single day, being on the 40. Volleyball wins a national championship. Baseball, softball just won a ‘natty,’ so everybody in this program is a champion at some sort of level. Sonia come in as a freshman. You just have to put your head down and work. That’s how it is in life. Where you go, a step in life you’re taking, just put your head down and work. Earn the respect of your teammates, in our case, and once you get that chance to step up and leave, you’ll be a leader. Do your part for the university.”
