Texas State football added punter David Nunez to its scholarship roster Saturday, with the team posting a video of the announcement to its social media account.
After Nunez was given the news, the redshirt senior ducked his head in emotion as his fellow Bobcats swarmed and cheered for the former walk-on.

Nunez, a Houston native, attended Second Baptist in high school, playing some cornerback and earning Second-Team All-District honors as a punter. He joined the Bobcats in 2020 and played sparingly in three years, punting once and holding kicks in two games before finally getting a shot as a redshirt junior.

Nunez played in all 13 games in 2024, attempting 15 punts and averaging 38.3 yards per attempt. He pinned 11 of his punts inside the 20-yard line and launched one that went more than 50 yards. He shared duties with former freshman punter Lars Rau, who transferred to Illinois in the offseason.

The punter also showed other skills in the red zone. Last season, he converted one two-point attempt with a throw to former Texas State tight end Konnor Fox against Lamar and another with a reception against Sam Houston State.
