Eric Teoro, MBA ’04, explored different careers before he found a passion in nursing.
After serving in the United States Air Force, Teoro earned an MBA at Illinois State. He then became a professor of business administration. After teaching for two decades, he made a career change.
“When I left higher ed, I worked in a nursing home and fell in love with the residents,” he said. “Working there led me to nursing.”
Teoro knew he had to pursue the newfound passion, and he knew where to do it: Illinois State’s Mennonite College of Nursing (MCN). During his previous time at Illinois State, he saw how MCN prepared nurses to make a positive difference in the world.
Although he saw a clear path to his future, Teoro faced financial barriers. That led him to apply for the Smith Family Geriatric Nursing Scholarship, a fund benefitting students pursuing oncology, geriatrics, or palliative care.
“I applied for the scholarship because I wanted to work with older individuals. I helped take care of my dad and others during their final years. It was a joy to be there for them and to give back,” Teoro said. “Receiving this scholarship was validation that serving an aging population is valuable.”
Teoro is currently enrolled in MCN’s accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
“My biggest goal for this year is to learn how to think like a nurse and develop the critical thinking skills that will enable me to serve effectively,” he said.
From giving back to students as a teacher to giving back to patients as a nurse, Teoro has dedicated his career to helping others.
“When I did my MBA, I received a scholarship. Over subsequent years, I was able to give back to the next generation of students,” he said. “I look forward to doing the same with nursing. It is an incredible vocation to enter; to assist others will be a pleasure.”
