Mike and Michelle Barns presented The Hunter Barns Memorial Scholarship in memory of their son, Hunter, a 2016 ACHS graduate.
During his time at ACHS, he participated in soccer, cross country and track and field. In addition, his senior year he pursued his dream of serving his country by enlisting in the United States Army – National Guard. The mission of the memorial is to honor Hunter and to bless others.
Due to the generosity of others, the Hunter Barns Memorial has been awarding scholarships since 2016. The primary determinant for selection is writing an essay titled “This I Believe.”
The scholarships were awarded to six Altamont Community High School students at the Senior Honors Program on May 8. The recipients include Riley Berg, Gavin Flack, Ava Hollinshead, Braden Magelitz, Aden McManaway and Peyton Osteen. Each student was awarded $1,100.
Berg will be attending Lake Land College to study physical therapy. He is the son of Randy and Jenee Berg.
Flack will be attending Lake Land College to study criminal justice. He is the son of Mark and Joni Flack.
Hollinshead will be attending Kaskaskia College to study nursing. She is the daughter of Neil and Stacey Hollinshead.
Magelitz will be attending Lewis and Clark College to study music education. He is the son of Terry and Erica Magelitz.
McManaway will be attending Kaskaskia College to study business. He is the son of Aaron and Mindie McManaway.
Osteen will be attending Lincoln Trail College as an undecided major. She is the daughter of Brooke and Justin Osteen.
Mike and Michelle Barns presented The Hunter Barns Memorial Scholarship at the St. Elmo High School Honors night on May 8.
This year’s recipients of the $1,100 scholarships were Kinley Carson and Macie Gammon.
Carson will be attending Lake Land College to study early childhood education. She is the daughter of Luke and Andra Carson.
Gammon will be attending Southern Illinois University Carbondale to study mortuary science and funeral services. She is the daughter of Kenneth and Rebekah Gammon.
