The Lefleur’s Bluff Mississippi chapter of the Links Incorporated kicked off the Mardi Gras season by partying with a purpose.
The event raised money for scholarships for juniors and seniors to get to college with the help of corporate sponsors.
Four recipients were recognized as winners from last year.
The nonprofit organization focuses on helping the youth in the Jackson area.
“We work with students in the arts. We work with students in health care services. We empower students to make sure they do all the things necessary to get to college. We help middle school students learn how to read, and we help the boys and girls club,” said chapter president Lurlene Irvin.”
Several local institutions received donations during the celebration, including Jackson State, Tougaloo College, Jackson Public Schools and Piney Woods.
The deadline for juniors and seniors to apply for scholarships for the upcoming school year is Monday.
