NEWTON, Miss. (WTOK) -The second annual Marquise “ Doda “ Poole Foundation scholarship event was held Friday night on East Central Community College’s campus.
Members from around the Newton County area came out to show their support as they awarded three $500 scholarships to students who are planning to further their education post-high school graduation.
Shanavia Poole, Marquise’s oldest sister and CEO & Founder of the Foundation, talks more about why it’s so important to give back to the students in their community.
“The biggest thing is my brother never got to graduate from high school. He actually passed before he was able to graduate, so we decided to go to education route because we knew that since he didn’t have that opportunity, we get to have the chance to give that opportunity back to other students that may not even have the opportunity either because they don’t have the funds for it. So whatever we could do to support them and uplift them, we want to do that,” Poole says.
The three students awarded were Newton City’s Daylan Chapman, Newton County’s Vance Richardson, and Union’s Tiara Campbell.
