Catholic Education Foundation – Season of Giving: Donations to CEF Provide Scholarships to Students in Need
While nearly three dozen states have some sort of tax credit for anyone wishing to support private schools and offer school choice through donations, Illinois allowed its programs to sunset a year ago.
That resulted in more than 9,600 students in Illinois losing the funding needed to attend their best fit school. Locally, more than 1,100 students in the Diocese of Joliet lost their scholarships.
Thanks to generous donors, the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) of the Diocese of Joliet was able to bridge the gap left from the elimination of the Invest in Kids Act, and while it will continue to work diligently to continue to fight for students looking for a Catholic education, more help for families may be coming in the form of the federalgovernment.
President-elect Donald Trump is a supporter of school choice, and is poised for dramatic expansion of school choice programs that would make it easier for parents to send their children to a private school.
Experts predict that as Republicans take control next year, the proposed Educational Choice for Children Act will be enacted that will give tax credits to people or businesses who donate to private-school scholarship funds on a federal level.
While students and parents wait for that program to be initiated, there are still opportunities to earn a state tax write-off for making donations to the CEF.
