FLORENCE — The Post and Courier Pee Dee’s Academic Achievers Presented by Victors wrapped up Monday night with a dinner, plaques and two students winning $2,500 scholarships each.
Public and private schools in Florence and Darlington counties nominated two scholars each month for the Academic Achievers student of the month program.
The program was only open to seniors who have an excellent grade-point average, leadership qualities and actively participate in school and community activities.
A panel of judges reviewed the nomination forms and selected two students each month to be recognized by The Post and Courier Pee Dee.
Elizabeth Mims from Hannah-Pamplico High School and Messiah Brayboy-Singletary from Lake City High School were chosen as Academic Achievers of the year.

“It’s nice to be recognized for the hard work I’ve put into my academics and extracurriculars, and I’m excited to see where life takes me,” Mims said after the dinner, a huge foamboard check clutched tightly in her hand.
“I feel very excited about it. I feel the money I won today will play a big part in continuing my education so I can make some change in the world,” said Brayboy-Singletary, who was also presented a large check.
“I am very, very thankful for this scholarship. I’m just super excited, I’m at a loss for words right now,” Mims said. “I’m going to the University of South Carolina. I’ll put that to where that goes.”
“I’m going into exercise science, I want to be a physical therapist,” Mims said.
“It took me a really long time to realize I wanted to go into physical therapy. My mom’s an OT (occupational therapist), and my aunt is also a physical therapist. I learned last semester I wanted to be a physical therapist. I know what’s what I want to do,” Mims said.
Lake City High School senior Messiah Brayboy-Singletary, who was the October winner, was chosen as The Post and Courier Pee Dee’s male Academic Achiever of the Year.
“I plan to attend the University of South Carolina to major in sports media to become a sports broadcaster some day,” Brayboy-Singletary said.
“Starting in high school, I started playing lots of sports and fell in love with it. I was real big on academics since I was small, and I love to write and read,” he said. “At first I decided I wanted to become a journalist, and I realized I still loved sports, and I wanted to incorporate all that together. Then I found out about sports media and sports broadcasting.”
“I want to shine a light on Lake City High School. There isn’t a lot of light being shined on a lot of good things we’re doing,” Brayboy-Singletary said.
Both students thanked their favorite coaches and students for the positive impacts they had on their lives.
